Two-Year Accessibility Plan Released

The Minister of Families, Honourable Heather Stefanson, has issued a two-year plan to highlight the activities that government will undertake in the next 24 months to advance accessibility. Future actions are identified in strategic areas, such as:

  • The accessibility standard development process
  • Government leadership
  • Public awareness, and
  • Accountability

The two-year plan also identifies compliance under The Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA) as a strategic area for action.  Manitoba will implement a progressive approach to achieve compliance and enforcement of the requirements under accessibility legislation.

This progressive approach aims to reduce the use of punitive enforcement actions and decisions.  The approach places particular attention on the concept of “educating into compliance.”

What is “educating into compliance?”

Educating into compliance means providing support to organizations in ways that best encourage and promote their compliance with the AMA, its standards and deadlines. The approach includes targeted outreach, awareness raising and developing and refining tools, resources and training that are tailored for each sector (e.g.: municipalities and other public sector organizations, and private and non-profit sector organizations).
